How do deaf people order a coffee? Most of the time, they simply point at a menu or chalkboard item – not the most inclusive approach. To change all this, “Kaffee ohne Worte” aims to teach coffee house staff the basics of sign language related to the ordering process. The initiative offers to help coffee house owners across Vienna to pick up the necessary sign language skills, naturally with a focus on coffee. The handy starter kit contains brochures, postcards, stand-up displays, and posters featuring the most important signs. An additional workshop trains café staff in their active use. “Kaffee ohne Worte” wants to establish a community that welcomes social networking without handicaps – signified to the outside world via a distinctive sticker at the entrance. A clear invitation for more inclusion and hospitability.
