The Cinemacity app streams Paris’s greatest movie moments to your phone – but only when you reach the locations they were filmed in.
While Hollywood remains the center of the movie world, nobody makes films like the French. From bank heist flick Rififi (an influence on Reservoir Dogs) to the sweetly comic Amelie: If it’s stylish and on the silver screen, there is a good chance it was made in Paris. Probably by a man smoking a cigarette.
It’s this history of cinematic excellence that inspired the Cinemacity app. The idea is simple: Once the app is installed, users walk around Paris until they arrive at a famous movie location. The app then lets them watch a clip that was filmed in the very same place.
You can search for locations by director, name, and area, so you are never far from a spot of cinematic artistry. And if you are feeling especially adventurous – on vacation in Paris, that’s a given – you can embark on a Cinewalk, a collection of highlights found in one particular area. The ‘Belleville Kids’ walk, named after the trendy quarter it is set in, is the most highly rated, combining film locations with close proximity to pretentious book shops. We are in Paris, after all.
If you like a TV serial, the people behind the app have produced a selection of original ten-minute dramas, made up of five two-minute episodes each. Every time you reach a certain location you can watch another episode on your phone. It’s like living in your own soap opera.
Finally, if you fancy yourself as a director, you can make your own “sweded” movies – i.e. irreverent, funny remakes of famous films set in the city. Well, that’s certainly more original than taking a selfie.
